The Book
It was the day before my grand father fell. Grandpa and I were cleaning out the attic. We had been doing it for about an hour. Grandpa was talking about a particular blanket we had just unearthed when I saw the chest. There was nothing particularly unusual about the chest, but it drew me to it some how. I was walking towards it when
Grandpa called “Jack.” I turned around. He said, “We don’t need to go near that. It is locked anyway.”
“OK” I said, but I really wanted to know what was in that chest.
The next day I got checked out of school early. It was the last day of school so it was not uncommon for someone to get checked out.
They told me that my grandpa as in the hospital. He had fallen down the stairs, and kept asking for me.
I went to see him. His leg was up in a cast suspended above the bed. He said “ Oh, you are here I have something for you.” He pulled out a key “ It’s to the chest” He said. Before I could ask him any questions a nurse came in and told me I had to leave.
Two days later I was sitting on the sofa wondering what he meant by “ The Chest” Then it hit me. The chest in the attic. I ran down to grandpa’s. Which is only a little way down the street. I ran up to the attic and located the chest. I opened it and looked at what was inside.
It was a book. It had a red cover with black binding and blue edged pages.
Then my mom called. We had to go to a PTA meeting. Around the third guest speaker I got bored. So I decided to read. I opened the book and suddenly my seat fell out from under me. I was falling. I was going to die. Then there was a flash of light and all was black.
Caspia
“Hello,” came a voice from somewhere. “Are you all right?” I opened my eyes.
“I’m fine,” I said. “Where am I?”
“You’re in Caspia.”
“Where?”
“Caspia.”
“Oh, OK.”
I stood up. “Who are you?” I asked.
“I’m Cartain. Cartain, prince of Caspia.”
I looked around. There were high blue mountains and deep green valleys. The air smelled of sweet plums and tasted of honey. The air was crisp and cool. Far off in the distance I could see the sea. It was a beautiful blue-green, almost jade.
Then I got a good look at Cartain. He had blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. His face was pale, and his eyes were blue. He wore a brown tunic and green short pants. His boots were brown leather. Around his neck he had a pendant that was gold in the middle, red next, then blue around the edge. By his side was a bow and at his back a quiver of arrows.
“What is your name?” he asked.
“Jack,” I stated.
Then suddenly “Cartain,” someone called. “Rillian,” he called back.
A man walked into a clearing. He had short red hair, and blue eyes. He dressed similarly to Cartain.
“Cartain,” he said, “Your father awaits at the castle.”
“Very well, Rillian.”
“Who are you?” I asked.
“I am Rillian, the shape shifter.”
We walked back towards a castle through a thick woods smelling of pine. When we finally arrived we were swept into a ballroom.
Cartain started to say something when the roof was torn off and Cartain was grabbed by something lime green.
Rillian and I ran after it. Rillian changed into a flying horse and I rode on his back, but we still lost sight of it.
Rillian said “He is being taken to The Black Castle. You must free him as is prophesized. I will give you four gifts. The first is a horn that will find me wherever I am and bring me to help you. The second is a bow and a quiver of arrows that will always fly true and to your mark. The third is this dagger. The white site will heal any injury, while the black side will cut down to the soul. The fourth and last is a means of transportation. This cloak will take you where ever you want to go.”
“ Thank you” I said. I put on the cloak and off I went. Inside the Black Castle I immediately saw Prince Cartian. As soon as I called to him a giant green snake appeared.
I shot at it with my arrow and cut it with my Dagger. I eventually killed it, but in the fray the cloak was destroyed. I blew the horn and Rillian appeared. He turned into an eagle and flew us home.
When we got home I slept like a rock.
The Map
I remember the morning I was looking for Cartian, when I stumbled upon Rillian’s bedroom. The door was open so I walked in.
On the desk there was a map of Caspia. It was framed in gold and blue. It appeared to be printed on a cream colored sort of silk. On it were marked mountains, valleys, rivers, oceans, plains, and any number of other things. There was a path drawn in red ink. It looked as though Rillian had been charting a course through Caspia.
As I was looking at it he came in and chased me away, scolding me for being nosey.
I wondered what he was planing. Now I know.
Creatures
The next day I got up and the first thing I saw was a note written on red paper. It said:
Cartain, Jack,
I have gone to stop the witch. Don’t try to stop me. It was the witch who sent wat ever caught Cartian, and she created the sn
ake too. She must be stopped. I’ll be the one to do it. Good Bye,
Rillian
I ran into Cartians room.
“Rillian is gone.” I said.
“What!” he said.
I showed him the note.
“We must leave at once!” He said.
Before I knew it we were in the stable saddling our horses for our trip. Then we were off.
We tromped through the woods for days. Pausing only to eat a small amount of food and take a small sip of water. Then we were off again.
We came to a small clearing with a crowd of animals in it. Our horses bucked us off, and ran. The animals ran too.
We walked a little way. Then we saw something move. He came out he was an elf. He introduced himself. His name was Glen. He was a pixie. He had red hair and bright green eyes. His wings were gold with translucent colored patches.
Ha spoke to Cartain for a moment then called three winged horses.
They were cream colored with gold manes.
We had been riding them for a long time when we past some centaurs. Gwen pointed them out by name. There was Westin, Laurel, and Cricken.
We rode by a dwarf his hair was red. He wore a suit of white and gold.
I thought I saw a unicorn but I could be wrong.
I looked at the map. We would enter the desert soon.
Sorry about the formatting. This was the very first thing I wrote. As you can see it's isn't done. When i was in 6th grade and wrote it, It was done. It was about 5 pages longer than my teacher wanted it, and was even in the school library for a while. Unfortunatly as a 6th grader I knew a lot about computers, namely password protecting, unfortunatly now I don't know the password for the rest of it. If i figure it out I'll post it. Anyway i came upon it on 6 different floppy disks and decided to give you all an insite into the history of my writting. Peace!
