Indigo darkness broke rank
like night’s dank precipitate lees,
tendrils of brumous vapour disappearing
as morning’s orb rose to our advantage.
Overhead, idle chatter of the Colobus
fell silent, as the sentinel roar
of a uppermost male
warned of a circling sea eagle
all too ready to pluck its meal
from the lush greenery
of jungle’s now sunlit canopy.
Below in a camouflaged and jaspé clearing
a sentry sat smoking a Russian Prima,
morning set nature’s quietus of one careless minded,
single burst from an AK 104 was all it took.
Not far away, a birth was happening
a deserted girl in a village hut
tore at the umbilical cord with her teeth.
In the distance sporadic gunfire indicated
the rebel advance was now imminent.
Soon her village would be in flames..
Dark blood poured from the soldier’s wounds
as air gurgled out of punctured lungs
blackening mist enveloped his mind
when shock and death overtook him.
Already vultures circled overhead
alerted to the carnage below
all too ready to peck out those eyes
at the first sign of death’s stillness.
Bloodied and weary the girl held
the caul covered head close to her
knowing only too well that death
was imminent for both of them.
Already slashing machetes and panga
were butchering those to old to run away.
The Mayi-Mayi are not known
for the wanton waste of human flesh.
High in the tree tops a black Colobus monkey
looked skywards towards the fading cries
of her once inquisitive and playful youngster.
Whilst below a troop of determined chimpanzees
planned their next tactical manoeuvre
as nature designs its own entropic solution.
it seems that man’s evolutionary progress
involves the primates too.
In the clearing a native regular
picked up a half-smoked Prima.
While others rifled through tunics
and pockets of dead rebel soldiers.
Soon the jungle will be encased in darkness
as a black panther moves silently through
towards a family of wild pigs routing noisily.
High above the Colobus watch intently.
