A quick note to the reader to explain this poem.... My husband and I came through Nevada on our way back home from our vacation.  When we got to Denios's Corner we stopped and I went inside to pay for $10.00 in gas.  My husband pumped the gas and when we were done, we left.  The nearest town is 90 miles away.  About 70 miles into the trip we saw the lights and heard the siren of the police.  We were pulled over first by a Sheriff and then a highway patrol officer.  The people claimed that we owed them an additional $10.00.  The police let us know that if we did not go back and pay these people, we would go to jail.  To avoid this and to speed us on our trip, we turned around and made the 70 mile journey back to this place.  I paid the additional $10.00 and another $10.00 for gas to get us to the next town.  The gas there is $3.79 a gallon.  In the rest of the state it is $2.40.  After we continued on our journey, we were stopped 8 times by various sheriff's and highway patrol officers on our way out of the state.
Here is the poem in it's entirety.

Venus Flytraps are so enticing.
They wait so patiently for their prey
then snap! Mission Accomplished!
Then they wait for their next victim.

Nevada is like a Venus Flytrap.
Don’t be fooled by its supposed liberalism
~ gambling, whoring, drinking and $3.95 steak plus eggs.
When you go there … wait for the snap!

Denio’s Corner is the bait in the trap
no gas for 90 miles ~ so they charge you.
Tourist Trap ~ Zap! You’ve been caught.
Don’t pay their price ~ snap pop!!

Caught you are. They call the Sheriff
if you don’t pay their price ~ your stuck in a trap.
The trap closes shut and
you’re a wanted fugitive ~ unable to escape.

Nevada has you in their trap now!
You are unable to escape their snare
till you leave the state ~ if the let you!
Otherwise, the cops will get you ~ zap!

Harassment?  Not according to the Venus Flytrap.

Sounds like a place to avoid to me..... I am sure Nevada has it's merits....but not at Denio's Corner. Interesting angle for a poem. Enjoyed your grumblings.

Your story sounds like the beginning of a Stephen King type novel. It must be quite unnerving to be pursued by police cars, lights flashing, not once but 8 or 9 times.
I have never been to Nevada and your experience would not be welcome in their tourist guide, I reckon.
An interesting read with the knowledge of truth behind it.

Like a horror movie it is! quite a nasty experience.
I particularly liked explosive sounds of the trap snapping shut.
Thanks for the heads-up, this poem will come to every time I hear Nevada mentioned.
