When winter's icy fingers freeze the days
And long dark nights put all the world to rest;
When snow flakes dance, their whiteness all ablaze,
And childrens' sleep with fantasy is blessed;
When Christmas trees are bright and gaud'ly dressed
Then ev'ry waking thought, or so it seems,
Is filled with breathless, thrilling Christmas dreams.
For weeks and weeks the dazzling fairy lights
Illuminate the skies and light the streets.
Then, as we sleep, we count away the nights
And think of all those scrumptious Christmas treats,
Those sugar-coated, candy-covered sweets.
Each day seems like a century or more
As eagerly we wait for what's in store.
We tell ourselves the tales of Christmas past
And often mix the fantasy with fact;
Our memories are seeming unsurpassed;
Or are we lost within some unseen pact?
As years pass by the truth is less exact
And our remembrances all go askew -
Or have we all forgotten what we knew?
We tell about a child to sorrow born
Upon a winter's night, so chill and cold.
We tell of angels on that far-off morn
And gifts of spices rare and precious gold.
Then as we raise our voices, loud and bold,
We sing our hymns upon a midnight clear -
And then forget it for another year!
We like to think we celebrate a birth,
But all the gifts we shower on ourselves!
Such poverty exists upon our earth,
Yet still we smile at Santa's naughty elves
And still we pack our baskets from the shelves.
If we dont eat to bursting, we're outcast -
While hungry children somewhere breathe their last.
And while our streets are safe to walk and roam
To watch our children play and have their fun,
In countries not so far away from home
The children do not play, each owns a gun!
They learn to shoot before they learn to run.
And while we teach our children to be good -
So many others wash their hands in blood.
I wish a Happy Christmas to you all
As you enjoy your extra, special day;
But spare a thought for those who starve and fall
And mention them if you should think and pray.
May all your dreams come true on Christmas Day.
May joy be yours, whatever faith you serve.
May we all get the Christmas we deserve.
