A vision, a dream perchance, of one magical Winter's Eve,
A clear moonlit night, reflecting upon such earthly beauty.
Dazzling colours, dancing across icicles hanging from branches,
Forming a prism, mesmerizing, lovely to watch.
Sidewalks shoveled, snow pushed to the side,
Now crusted, but untouched, in shimmery white.
A man and woman walk, hand in hand,
Only aware of each other, hushed voices, secrets shared,
An occasional peal of laughter rings through the air.
I imagine two pairs of twinkling, love filled eyes.
A flurry of snowflakes begin, covering the sky,
They look upward to catch them on their tongues,
But soon look away blinking, to clear their eyes.
The woman shivers, as an icy wind begins to blow,
And the man puts his arm around her, pulling her close.
She wraps herself around him, leaning her head on his arm,
As they move down the street, intoxicated with love.
A lonely tear spills from my eye, escaping down my cheek.
I hear no soft voices, no hint of laughter, I see two lovers
Warmed now and eager to get home, gazing into each other's eyes.
Slowing only for a soft kiss, a caress, moving closer together,
Then off again, remembering they are still on the street.
I realize that I am envious, yet still I peer closer.
As their faces come into focus, my eyes widen and I stare foolishly.
This couple, these lovers, they are you and I, my dear man,
My vision is of our future, our Winters' Eves to come.
Closing my eyes now, I pull the blanket higher to snuggle underneath.
With a sigh and a smile playing on my lips,
I whisper goodnight to you, as I drift off to sleep.
