I recently was blown away by watching the “Chinook Salmon” return to where they were born. It is quite an awesome experience to watch hundreds and hundreds of these wonderful creatures returning to start new generations of their kind.
These salmon that I watched swim hundreds of miles up the Sacramento River from the San Francisco Bay after spending about 3-5 years out at sea. Once on their trip up the river to spawn they do not eat and then die soon after spawning-- creating new life. Some of the streams that feed the Sacramento River where the salmon end up spawning in are only 5 inches deep in parts. It is quite a feat for these guys. Their large bodies of 10 to 60 lbs swim half way out the water in these streams and the amount of persistence to create future survival was quite magical and a marvel to see.
Anyway, these creatures touched me and their plight of survival and connections with all of life, thus the Poem. Oh be warned the 5th verse is quite the tong twister you may have to read it a few times to make it through.
~~~~~~~~
Salmon’s Return
Swimming with memories-- swimming for life,
invigorating vessels-- shimmering light.
Thriving in oceans-- tables of plenty,
rivers commotions-- stomachs so empty.
Persevering endurance-- arduous the falls,
majestic performance-- answering the calls.
Survival screams its calling-- the calling rings clear
surviving streams crawling-- the ending seems near.
Return to the beginning-- return to begin again
return to begin ending-- returning to spawnings end.
No reason to fear it -- old life is dear,
Miracles of spirit -- new life draws near.
Adventures in time-- life’s journey we roam,
engrained in the mind-- life’s journey back home.
What appears to begin-- now never has ended,
what was old in the end-- swims newly-- so splendid!
