You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.

You were clapping louder than the seals,
In the dream I remembered you in.
Your right shoe prodding at the ice
They surrounded me with.
It has always been the voice of a man,
That has led me to lose time.
First it was my father with that bicycle,
He dreamt would free him of our walks.
Then it was some heartless Dean’s signature
Rejecting my dreams in a brusque three, four lines.
At last you arrived with your foreign accent,
Smiling in the aisles of our local commissary,
I spilt something on your shoes one night,
And spent all of these years apologizing.
The young doctor signs my cast neatly,
Confident that I will heal in no time.
One of the Nurses offers a ride,
Politely insists to see me inside.
She has spent her young life,
Doctoring wounds back to place,
Discovering, as I knew she would
We don’t have a staircase.

For Zaina Kae
We met in kindergarten in Dhahran,
She crawled across my arm with alluring charm,
Announced that my luck would change and it did,
The way bubbles can in the sun, if you watch them.
Half of my heart has freckles and red hair,
A menthol esse cigarette ready to spare,
A nonchalant way of sending doubts home with a note
And lines I find, hard not to quote.
Half of my heart has shoulders for a sundress,
But skin that refuses to tan, or follow trends
A decorative room where at times sounds transcend
Like the séances we once believed were true
Kissy Kissy one night might come after you!
How many hours and evenings can we spend on an escalator?
Pretending to be interested in the reflection of the gym?
I will not look at pretzels, hats, or moving statues on treadmills
And argue tirelessly with you about them.
I wish you’d find that mirror,
The one I’ve watched you through all this time
And use it as you’re rush applying
Humming My Funny Valentine...
The one night I find someone to dance with,
I will make sure you’re nowhere to be found,
Singing Hindi songs to a taxi driver who is occupied on his phone,
Driving you miles away from home,
But closer to where we left off.
I pass it every day
On my evening jog
It must have been hit
By a car
And crawled off to die
By the side of the road
I can only hope
It did not suffer.
I watch it change
In the wake of high-priced cars
And luxury smog
Its mottled fur, pulling away
Its feline frame
Slowly reclaimed
By the pavement.
I called the city of L.A.
But no one came
And it remained
For months through a summer
Of liquidation
And foreclosure
The terrible face
Of hard times
And the indifference of life
Here in the fast lane.
I try to look away
But cannot divert myself
From this private pain
Playing out on the walkway
An empty sequin collar
A white zipper spine
Now all that remain.
